This delivery was very similar to Emory's deliver, except we were induced this time. At my 38 week appointment, my amniotic fluid was high. Apparently if my water were to break it could lead to complications, so Dr. Cassidy decided it was best to induce me. We scheduled the induction for Tuesday the 2nd, which meant we had to go in to the hospital at midnight Monday night/Tuesday morning.
Monday Martin worked most of the day, and I spent the day trying to get some last minute things done around the house. Kathy came that afternoon to watch Emory, which was helpful. I took a short nap that afternoon and had a nice Chick-fil-a lunch. I wasn't allowed to eat past 2:00, which was not fun!
We arrived at the hospital around 12:15. We checked in and they took us to the room. The room was nice and big, and Martin had a pull out couch to sleep on. I was only 1 cm dilated when we got there. They gave me a liter of fluid and then gave me Cytotec. It helps to dilate and soften the cervix. I tried to sleep that night, but with all the monitors and noises it was impossible. Around 5:00am they checked again and I was 2cm and about 75% effaced. I had been having some minor contractions, but nothing too painful. They started the pitocin at 6:00am, and from there on out the contraction started getting stronger. I was trying to wait as long as possible before I got the epidural, but around 8:00 the contractions really started to hurt. They gave me the epidural around that time and I felt much better! Things seemed to be progressing well and around 11:30ish I was 9cm dilated, but he was still pretty high. They checked again around 12:15 and the nurse said he just about to come out! She paged Dr. Cassidy, and as soon as she got there I started pushing. I pushed for about 10 minutes or so and there he was, all 7lbs 15oz of him. He had a little bit of trouble coming out because he was facing up, but it all worked out. It took him a second to start crying, which scared me a little bit, but once they suctioned out his lungs he was fine.
We spent the next hour or so holding him and looking at him, then they took him to the nursery for his bath and check-up. They moved us to a regular room and we tried to relax the rest of the day. Martin left that night to go home and help put Emory to bed. Bobby came to see Miles that night and he brought me a huge Jersey Mike's sub! It was delicious, seeing that I hadn't had deli meat in over 9 months! I kept Miles in the room with me all night, which meant I got no sleep. Miles actually slept pretty well, but I kept checking on him every 5 minutes.
Wednesday our pediatrician, Dr. Ragsdale, came and examined him. She said he looked great, and that his kidney seemed to be functioning fine. We called the pediatric urologist to come by and see him, but we didn't know when he actually would make it over. I had been so anxious to hear how his kidney was doing. He was making urine, so that was a positive sign. Martin brought Emory up to the hospital to meet Miles that afternoon. She was SO sweet to Miles! She kept saying "baby, baby!" Martin got Emory a stuffed animal and a coloring book and told her they were presents from Miles. when Emory opened them, she tried to give her presents to Miles. So so sweet. Martin took Emory to gymnastics that night, and then came back to the hospital to stay the night. Dustin and Mindy came to visit and see Miles. Miles did not sleep as good the 2nd night. He was wide awake from 11:30 until 4:30. Every time I would try to set him in the cradle, he would wake up and start crying. Once I held him and fed him he would pass out again, but he would not let me put him down. Finally around 4:30 the nurse came in to check on him. She decided to take him to the nursery so I could get some sleep.
Thursday Dr. Hill (the urologist) finally came by to see Miles. He did an ultrasound and said the right kidney looked completely normal, and he did not see any sign of the left kidney. He said that there was really no reason to treat him any differently than a child who had 2 kidneys. He wants Miles to follow-up with him yearly just to make sure his blood pressure and renal function look good. As soon as he left the room I started balling!!! I was expecting there to be something wrong with the right kidney, or at least expecting that he would have to see Dr. Hill very frequently. This was the BEST news we could have received!!! I have spent this entre pregnancy anxious and worrying, and praying for the health of his kidney, and God answered all of our prayers!!! I am forever thankful to God who truly answers prayers.
They let us go home Thursday afternoon. He looked so tiny when we put him in the car seat. Emory was very happy to have all of us at home. We are settling in nicely, and love our new family of four!
Love the story! Miles is beautiful! What a beautiful family you have, Lindsay and Martin!
