The Moment of Truth...Sage Meets Her Little Sister

One of the biggest questions we had about bringing Emory home was "How will Sage react?"

Sage has been our baby since the moment we got her. She has been extremely spoiled since day one! Before we got a dog Martin would always say, "I do not want to keep a dog in the house." Needless to say, Sage is strictly an inside dog...she even has her own chair in the living room! I also remember myself saying, " There is noway I am letting the dog sleep in our bed." Guess what? Sage sleeps in the bed every night. So, it is pretty obvious that Sage runs our house....and we love that dog with all of our hearts!

This is how we told Martin's family that we were expecting. We had Sage wear this shirt!

Sage is a great dog, she's never been aggressive to a person or another dog. So why were we so concerned about how she would act with Emory? Well, there are a couple of reasons. First of all, Sage is a Great Dane. She weighs about 110 lbs, so she's pretty large. Like I said, she's the sweetest dog in the world, but anytime you have a dog that big around a tiny baby it makes you a little nervous. Secondly, as you can tell Sage is a little spoiled. She also LOVES Martin and can get a little jealous when Martin shows other people attention. Naturally, we were concerned that Sage might get jealous when Marin was holding Emory, or that she would be upset that she wasn't the center of attention. Finally, last month we found out that Sage had ringworm on her face. She's been taking fluconazole, so the ringworm is probably gone, but until we went back to the vet for another culture we couldn't be 100% sure. Ringworm is one of the few diseases that dogs can pass to humans, so we wanted to be extra careful with Emory around.

The moment of truth had arrived. We brought Emory inside in her car seat and placed it down on the floor. Martin stood by Sage, and held her while she sniffed Emory. Sage did great! She was very curious and wanted to keep sniffing, but she was gentle and not too aggressive. We made sure to let Sage get close enough that she could smell Emory, but we didn't let her touch Emory. We wanted Sage to keep her distance, just to be extra careful with the ringworm. We kept a close eye on Sage for the first week, and she did really well.

Anywhere that Emory was, Sage wanted to be also. If I was feeding Emory upstairs  in the bed, Sage would come upstairs and lay right by my feet. At night, Sage usually cuddles with Martin (like I said, she loves him). However, Emory slept in the Pack N Play on my side of the bed...so Sage curled up by my feet and laid as close to the Pack N Play as possible. She was acting much better than we ever hoped for! She wasn't acting jealous, she wasn't being aggressive, she was just curious and wanted to be a part of everything.

I have a feeling that as Emory gets older (and once we get rid of the ringworm!) her and Sage are going to be best buddies! Sage is a great dog...and it really is true that Great Danes are gentle giants.
