So I always said I would never have a blog! Who has time to keep up a blog? Who is going to read my blog? Who really cares about what I have to say? Well that all changed when we had Emory!
Most of our family lives far away...so I figured this would be a great way for everyone to keep up with Emory. We try to call often and give updates, but sometimes things get a little crazy and a week will have gone by without us talking to our families...and A LOT happens with Emory during that week. So...this will be a great way for everyone to keep up with her! Just a warning...my writing is never grammatically correct...so don't judge :)
Lets start with Saturday November 17th, the day she was born. I had been having some constant cramping on Friday the 16th. I took Sage on a 2 mile walk, so I figured I was just a little tired from that walk...after all I was 39 weeks pregnant! About 7:00 that night the cramping started coming and going and was getting a little stronger. I still wasn't sure that I was having contractions...obviously I've never had a baby, so I had no clue what contractions felt like. I sent my friend Summer a text describing the pain, and sure enough she thought I was having contractions. I was a little doubtful. Looking back at the text messages I kind of laugh at this statement...I guess Summer knew Emory was ready!
Summer (at 9:30pm on Friday the 16th)-"Still having contractions?"
Me-"Yeah but not bad and pretty far apart. I'm not thinking it will happen tonight"
Summer-"Hmmm we will see :) "
So we went about our night and I woke up about midnight the next morning...the contractions were getting stronger and closer together. About 1:30am I woke Martin up and told him I thought we should go to the hospital. Martin had to work at 7:00am, so his response was something along the lines of, "I don't think we need to go yet...your water hasn't broke and the contractions aren't 5 minutes apart." To which I replied, "Well I'm going to the hospital whether you come or not"...of course he got up and we went to the hospital :) We got the hospital about 2:30am and I was only 1 cm dilated....they checked again at 5:00am and I was still only 1cm so they sent us home.
We got home around 6:00am and Martin had to be at work by 7:00am...I felt terrible that I had kept him up all night for no reason. Literally as soon as we got home my contractions got MUCH stronger. I tried to go to sleep, but the contractions were so painful that I couldn't sleep. They kept getting stronger...to the point that they literally brought me to my knees. Normally I would have gone to the hospital, but they had JUST sent us home....I didn't know what to do so I just tried to tough it out thinking they would go away. Finally about 8:00am I couldn't take it anymore. I knew Martin couldn't leave work, and I didn't want to make him leave for no reason again...so I called my friend Allison who came and picked me up (there was NO chance of me driving at this point). We got to the hospital around 9:30am and I was 4cm dilated at that point...I couldn't believe the time had come, and I was going to have a baby!!! So I called Martin, and he was at the hospital in about 10 minutes :)
They moved us to a labor and delivery room, and I was ready for the epidural! I didn't get the epidural until about 12:30. I told my myself that there was no chance I was going to let a student give me the epidural and of course a student came in to give the epidural. I was in so much pain at that point that I didn't care! I just wanted it ASAP. After I received the epidural everything was SO much better. The pain was gone, and I could just sit back and enjoy the entire experience. It was a good thing that I got the epidural when I did because at that point I was already 8cm.. then a few hours later it was time to start pushing!
The great part about the epidural is that I had no clue that I was having contractions, so the nurse had to tell me when to push. I only pushed for about 10 contractions and there she was...the love of our lives! She arrived November 17th at 2:28pm!
Martin was a trooper during the entire delivery. He was encouraging and didn't seem to get too overwhelmed with everything that was going on...I think he was just taking it all in like I was.
Overall the labor went very well...I am pretty lucky. It went by fast and smooth. I will say that the epidural was a life saver, and I highly recommend it to everyone!
We stayed in the hospital for two nights. The first night was great. Martin's parents arrived that afternoon, and my parents go in about 8:00 that night. The second day was pretty rough. Emory's bilirubin was high so they had to keep her under the bilirubin light ALL DAY! They would only bring her to the room every 3 hours for about 30 minutes to eat. Martin and I went to the nursery a few times to see her, but it broke my heart! She was crying her little heart out under that light, and of course I started crying too. Luckily, we were able to take her home on Monday as scheduled, and she's had no more bilirubin problems.
Well, I think this post has been long enough...it will be nice to come back and look at this post later on and remember this exciting day!!! We are so blessed and so in love with our little angel, and I thank God every day for this miracle.
